Due to the increase in demand for labor, peasant labor became more intense and slavery began to spread. Gender, racial, and ethnic hierarchies began to develop, as social and political elites became diverse. Because social and political hubs began to surge, the status of merchants increased. New forms of coerced and semi-coerced labor materialized in Europe, and slaves from Africa and the Americas became a part of culture and led to racial and gender roles.
